GitHub Copilot

A development assistant for IDE code completion, code chat and agent support. [H5]

Primary purpose

GitHub Copilot suggests code while you work and offers chat for understanding an existing implementation or discussing a change. Pick the integration deliberately: chat and agent capabilities differ across editors. [H5] Suggested workflow: provide a failing test, the relevant function and the expected behavior, then inspect the proposed fix as a small diff. This is an editorial workflow suggestion, not a hands-on performance finding. Individual plans include limited Free, Student for eligible verified students, and monthly Pro at USD 10, Pro+ at USD 39 and Max at USD 100. Business costs USD 19 per granted seat/month; Enterprise costs USD 39 per seat/month for GitHub Enterprise Cloud. These are not local tax-inclusive checkout prices. Credit consumption is separate from the subscription fee and the flex allotment can change. Conflicting Free chat quotas and additional-credit purchase eligibility are not asserted. [H1][H3][H4] The SDK supports programmatic integration; BYOK has separate provider billing. Equal SDK eligibility for every account and unlimited model API usage are not promised. GitHub administrative REST APIs are a separate surface. [H6][H9] Check the version/feature matrix for VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse, Xcode and NeoVim; completion, Chat and agent coverage differ. [H5]

Editorial strengths

Completion and chat inside an existing IDE can reduce the need to switch tools; this is a design benefit rather than a measured advantage over competitors. [H5] CLI and SDK access provide additional paths for terminal workflows and custom integrations. [H1][H6]

Limitations

Generated code is not guaranteed to be correct or secure. Chat is optimized primarily for English, with no equal-quality guarantee for Turkish or Spanish. [H7] A subscription does not make every agent operation unlimited; usage can consume credits. [H4]

Who it is for

A candidate for developers seeking help with small fixes, test drafts or understanding an existing codebase. Suggested rule for learners: do not merge a change you cannot explain. These are editorial suitability recommendations.
